What is Digital Inclusion? #vmvdlt #vmvwiki # #npf14lmd

"While digital divide and digital literacy have entered into common use – and into discussions by policy makers – the term digital inclusion is still quite new. Digital inclusion is a much broader category that addresses the other two. Importantly, “digital inclusion” has been articulated specifically to address issues of opportunity, access, knowledge, and skill at the level of policy."

How Google Maps knows about traffic #vmvwiki

Here's how it works: All iPhones that have Google Maps open and Android phones that have location services turned on send anonymous bits of data back to Google. This allows the company to analyze the total number of cars, and how fast they're going, on a road at any given time.

Andreas Ekström: The moral bias behind your search results#vmvwiki #vmvdlt #vmvresearch

Search engines have become our most trusted sources of information and arbiters of truth. But can we ever get an unbiased search result? Swedish author and journalist Andreas Ekström argues that such a thing is a philosophical impossibility. In this thoughtful talk, he calls on us to strengthen the bonds between technology and the humanities, and he reminds us that behind every algorithm is a set of personal beliefs that no code can ever completely eradicate.

After #MOOCs.. Massive adaptive interactive text (#MAIT) #vmvwiki #vmvdlt

"A MAIT is defined by the following characteristics: Automated, individualized assessments˲ Interactivity ˲ Adaptivity and Modularity."

"MOOCs, which are largely video-based, have translated all of the pedagogical problems with hoarding into an even less personal forum online. In other words, MOOCs have thus far focused on being massive, when they should strive to feel individual"

In a MAIT "when a student suffers a learning breakdown, that student needs immediate help in order to proceed" and "rather than listening to lectures, students will complete assignments from the MAIT, which has already been fine tuned to anticipate countless learning breakdowns."

Crackdown: Amazon Sues to Stop Phony Product Reviews #vmvwiki

Crackdown: Amazon Sues to Stop Phony Product Reviews - The New York Times

Oct 2015:

  • A lawsuit in which Amazon accuses more than 1,000 people of offering to post bogus glowing write-ups for as little as $5 apiece might give you pause

  • About 45 percent of consumers consider product reviews when weighing an online purchase, according to Forrester Research. Two-thirds of shoppers trust consumer opinions online, according to research by Nielsen.

  • For example, a half-star increase in a restaurant's online rating can increase the likelihood of securing, say, a 7 p.m. booking by 15 to 20 percent, said Jenny Sussin, a director at Gartner Research. So a restaurateur might be tempted to pay $250 for 50 positive reviews online in the hopes of raising that rating.

My own social media : Joke #vmvwiki

I haven't got a computer, but I was told about Facebook and Twitter and am trying to make friends outside Facebook and Twitter while applying the same principles.

Every day, I walk down the street and tell passers by what I have eaten, how I feel, what I have done the night before and what I will do fort he rest of the day. I give them pictures of my wife, my daughter, my dog and me gardening and on holiday, spending time by the pool. I also listen to their conversations, tell them I "like" them and give them my opinion on every subject that interests me... whether it interests them or not.

And it works. I already have four people following me: two police officers, a social worker, and a psychiatrist.

Two Apple Mac viruses found #vmvwiki

Two Mac viruses strike at the heart of the platform's secure image. ‘Thunderstrike 2’, a worm which moves from Macbook to Macbook using hardware, joins privilege escalation bug seen in the wild for the first time

One exploit allows a malicious program that gains access to a Mac to run as though it is the administrator of the computer – a vulnerability known as “privilege escalation”.
The second about to be revealed to researchers at the Black Hat security conference in Las Vegas. It uses a bundle of weaknesses in the firmware of a computer, the embedded operating system which runs the lowest-level functions such as fans, power supply units, and USB ports, and lets the researchers overwrite that software with their own code, and five of these six weaknesses are present on Macs as well as PCs.

1. Speakers.

Configuration issues

Problem: Device disconnects

It appears that by default Windows power saving kills a USB device. The mouse connected would die and not reconnect. To disable this you need to

  1. go to Start > type in "Device Manager" >

  2. Expand Bluetooth Radios >

  3. Right click on Generic Bluetooth Adaptor + Properties, and

  4. uncheck "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power"

What is USB isochronous data transfer? #vmvwiki #vmvhw

Have been trying to connect a web cam via an enhanced USB cable, but the audio is not very clear. Some discussion with JJ revealed that USB has different ways it transfers data.
isochronous is one way, and looks like my enhanced cable does not support this (I tried a non enhanced one and the audio was heaps better)
Check out http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USB  for more info on USB.
Our next solution is to try and use a
Webcam>USB-Ethernet Adaptor>Ethernetcable>USB-Ethernet Adaptor>PC
Apparently this will allow up to 100m extension which should be enough for my classroom web cam.
Next stop is to find a pair of inexpensive USB-Ethernet adaptors !

US schools seek refund over $1.3bn iPad project #vmvwiki #vmvdlt

Schools in Los Angeles are seeking compensation from Apple over a $1.3bn (£870m) iPad-based education project that has gone awry.
They have sent letters to Apple and its project partners seeking refunds.
The project began in 2013 and aimed to give iPads and other computers to about 650,000 students.
It hit problems when students were able to bypass security systems on the tablets and because the computer-based curriculum was incomplete.

Rufus - Create bootable USB drives #vmvwiki

Rufus is a utility that helps format and create bootable USB flash drives, such as USB keys/pendrives, memory sticks, etc.

It can be especially useful for cases where:

you need to create USB installation media from bootable ISOs (Windows, Linux, UEFI, etc.)
you need to work on a system that doesn't have an OS installed
you need to flash a BIOS or other firmware from DOS
you want to run a low-level utility

https://rufus.akeo.ie/

Notes

  1. If you have an iso image just go to the lower part of rufus and select the iso, it will automagically set up the correct attributes in the boxes above.

  2. If you have an OS iso you can get you computer to come up with the bootable usb drive if you tap the F12 key on startup - its too late if the Windows start screen appears!. (often F8 is for BIOS, F9 for Windows recovery but you may need to play around on startup to figure out which is which)

Model for Digital Technologies education in NZ schools #vmvdlt

IITP are calling for a new Learning Area in NZ Secondary Schools; encompassing Digital Technologies at NCEA level, and Computational Thinking and Digital Literacy at the primary and lower secondary levels (or more accurately, a continuum from one to the other). This would see Digital sitting alongside Maths, Science, English etc as a core area, with each of the DT strands, or possibly a reduced subset, a subject in their own right.
